This book is the fifth in the series featuring Enzo Macleod. Enzo is back and this time chasing a cold case on at a three-star restaurant and country hotel located on a mountainside near Clermont-Ferrand in central France. It is a series that contains continuing characters and changes in their lives, so it is best read in order, but not essential. The focus in this book is almost completely on Enzo since most of the recurring characters do not appear in this story. (His daughter has a supporting role and three others appear briefly, but I once again I missed his unofficial team from Cahors.) The premise of the series is that Enzo is investigating the unsolved murder cases from a popular book. Enzo’s field is forensic science and the premise is that he is systematically reviewing evidence in old cases with the benefit of modern forensic science. In this case, modern day forensic science has very little impact. The science is interesting, but not tedious or explained in too much detail. Peter May writes a fast-paced story that is engaging enough to allow the reader to suspend disbelief in places. The dialogue in this book struck as forced in places, but the reasoning behind what I though was forced was clearer at the end. The food, wine, and setting are described in great detail. His books have a strong sense of place and that is part of what we enjoy about them. Once again, Enzo is apparently irresistible to women- including young women. The female characters in this series are not their strong point. Of course, his judgment in other areas also leads to dubious risks to personal safety. Otherwise, there would be no suspense. Central France in this book is not sunshine and soft mountain air. It is freezing cold, dark, and rainy. (This area was lovely when we were there in May. Lucky us! Unlucky Enzo!) The pages turn very quickly. These are not books that will change the world or your life, but they are entertaining. This series is one that we pre-order and compete to see who gets to read it first like the books by Martin Walker, Mark Pryor, Paul Doiron, Elly Griffiths and a few others. The entertainment value justifies the purchase price. We will be sorry when the series ends.Tags : Blowback [Chalmers Johnson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. hardcover with dust jacket,Chalmers Johnson,Blowback,Metropolitan Books,0316854867,USA,Political Science,Central government policies,International relations,Political economy
Blowback Chalmers Johnson 9780316854863 Books Reviews
Another tangled web of a mystery and more twists and turns in MacLeod's personal drama make this a steady read but the characters are eating and drinking on every page. Some mouth-watering menus spice up the scene as Enzo hunts for the murderer of France's celebrity chef.
I have enjoyed all of the Peter May books in the Enzo MacLeod books. I have read all that are out (I think) at least 2 times each including this latest one. They are good and surprising. Mystery lovers will find them worthwhile. The catch for me is that since I have read them in order, I sometimes find things a little out of time sequence like Laurent being 6 months old but Sophie is about 3 years older! If these are reprinted for Americans, the second book needs to correct the name of President Lyndon B. Johnson (from Johnston).
I am looking forward to the next installment.
I truly enjoyed Blowback, and dedicated most of the night to finish reading it. May has a wonderful gift of character development and intriguing plot lines. Enzo MaCleod is one complicated, conflicted, brilliant professor/detective! Enjoy this read, and you can take a nap later in the day!
Peter May has a different focus in this thriller the world of haute cuisine. His gastronomical descriptions tantalize one's appetite for food, while the developing plot whets one's appetite for mystery. Enzo McLeod continues to be a multi-faceted protagonist. A good read.
Fascinating information on modern French cuisine and an interesting murder mystery, but the overwhelming descriptive metaphors slowed the pace and tested my patience.
Enzo Macleod has a way of getting himself into life threatening situations and dragging his family with him. This is the 5th book of the Enzo Files and while not so intriguing as the Lewis Trilogy, I find the characters and plots far ahead of May's China series. The setting is atmospheric and those who are into the latest food and wine craze with a little murder thrown in will find this far ahead of some of its competitors.
I will be sorry to reach the end of the series with just two more of the unsolved murders to solve. If you haven't read the others, start with the first, Extraordinary People, and work your way through. You will find they are addictive.
Scottish author Peter May's newest Enzo Files series book, "Blowback", is set in the world of Michelin-rated restaurants in France. Enzo MacLeod, a man with an Italian mother and Scots father, a white streak in his hair, and eyes of different hues, is certainly one of the more interesting protagonists in mystery writing. The streak and eye color connote Enzo's Waardenburg's syndrome (look it up on Wiki), which seems not to have stood in the way of his professional accomplishments and his luck with the ladies. This book, "Blowback", is another in a series of MacLeod's investigation of "cold cases".
Michelin-rated 3 star chef, Marc Fraysse was found dead in a small cabin on the grounds of his restaurant-hotel. Mercurial and a prima donna in the kitchen (and out), seven years before the book begins. Was it murder? Was it suicide? The death remains unsolved and Enzi MacLeod is called in poke around and try to solve the case. Author May delves into the world of the Michelin ratings and the politics behind the awarding of stars. And as the subject of seven books, May brings along Enzi MacLeod's past relationships and brings his life up to date.
"Blowback" is a pleasant mystery, set in the Massif Central region of France. It's a good read.
