The Art of Balance Staying Sane in an Insane World edition by David J Bookbinder Stephanie C Bond Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

I read the author's previous book ‘Paths to Wholeness’ and was taken by the title of his new book. Over the last 20 years I have gathered a vast collection of all kinds of books on how to deal with stress, increase happiness, and have a healthy life. The promise of finding advise on how to find some balance in our turbulent world was welcome, and I started to read the e-book.

The Art of Balance is special, as it is based on real experience. The author guides you through his own experiences and the experiences of his clients in order to provide excellent instruction on how to improve the quality of your life and stay sane. Some of the methods described are very familiar to me after having spent years to ‘develop’ my own habits to live in this insane world. Others were new to me. David has the talent to keep your attention and at the same time keep both feet on the ground. His advice is ‘easy’ to understand and the methods work. As he indicates at the beginning, this book is a system rather than just single solutions. The explanation of the ‘characters’ of Al and Alice, the Unbalancer, the Balancer and the Rebalancer will help you to understand what impacts your life.

This book helped me to better understand some of my ‘survival’ habits and provided me with the full picture of how to deal with situations and improve my life. It gave me the ‘missing’ parts that I otherwise would need to discover in the next years. It is more complete than any of the other books of my collection, and as stated by David: it can save you 10 - 20 years of trial and error.

Also, I liked that the writing is to the point and that he was able to put it all together in a ‘little’ handbook (instead of creating a 300 page book). Thank you for writing it all up!

The Art of Balance Staying Sane in an Insane World edition by David J Bookbinder Stephanie C Bond Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I find it hard to believe I would enjoy, learn from and be supported by
a second book of David Bookbinders that I read, as much as the first, but “The
Art of Balance” became my constant companion and is now my most
recent reference book to read over and over and to recommend to
my friends.

In one of the chapters there is an exercise named “The Circles of Problems”
that exemplifies the kind of insightful and visually represented problem solving
that David makes easy to employ and memorable. Just this one exercise
shows visually how in a few minutes you can review what supports and tools
work for you in the even of the UnBalancer knocking you off balance and
how these balancing tools can “even the score” and bring back emotional,
physical and spiritual clarity in one fell swoop by just looking at what looks
like a donut with legs...

I highly recommend this book not only for it’s supportiveness but for
also for the tone of the book and the personal stories that are so
relatable.
This is a must-read for anyone struggling with emotional challenges from either internal turmoil or exogenous events that seem to be out of our control. The author artfully provides not just insights from decades of diverse experiences but practical exercises that one can keep in their toolbox and reference when needed. In this regard The Art of Balance is less a one-time self help read and more of a reference and exercise companion that you will want to keep as a partner. It will become more valuable each time you refer back to and practice a particular exercise. Ultimately the book can positively morph you the more you engage with it and possibly become a transformative part of your inner safeguard system.
I found it empowering and self-motivating. It truly was difficult to stop reading once I began. I found the book extremely well written, informative, and pardon my pun, balanced. It really gave me insight and direction into my recovery. The principles in the book, along with the exercises and examples, tied it all together for me and allowed me to gain a better understanding of the direction of my recovery. I found myself nodding my head up and down a lot with identification. My two favorite sections of the book were "Building Resilience" and "Uncertainty and Allies". The former focuses on positive bias, something that I practice with the gratitude tool, while the latter describes presence being the balancer's best ally. Both are areas that the book helps me focus on. Whether you're in a recovery program or just feel lost, the principles, exercises, and examples in this book can help regain a feeling of purpose and direction. It did for me.
If you want to avoid a long-winded and theory-based self-help book, then this is the book for you. David provides practical exercises that are easy to follow and they really do work. Even if you have a hectic lifestyle David gives you quick exercises to perform wherever and whenever you can fit them in.

I’ve never been able to finish any of the bloated self-help books that I’ve attempted to read in the past, but this was definitely a quick (and amusing) read for me. The author not only provides examples from his training as a therapist, but also from his own life experiences, which sets this book apart from other stuffy guides.

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone looking to make changes in their life!
In an age of anxiety this book provides a reliable system for immunizing yourself against the effects of stress, by helping you build the capacity to stay in balance emotionally, identifying specific ways to rebalance yourself when life throws you a curve ball, and developing the resilience necessary for keeping a positive outlook on life.

By creating specific characters (Unbalancer, Rebalancer, etc.) the author has personalized the forces of life in much the way we experience them, by giving a name to feelings that might otherwise overwhelm us. The author also points out the importance of the unbalancing forces in our lives in spawning creativity.

This book is a must have for artists and creative people.
